(15,420 posts)I just can't bring myself to feel sorry for rhino poachers.
But................it might be kind of the same thing as the Somali pirates, where the Somalis are pirates when once they were coastal fisherpeople because a) Europeans and Japanese fished out their waters, b) European corporate interests dump toxic waste off the Somali coast, making it impossible for OTHER fish to come back. So they became pirates.
Is it the same with these poachers? What kinds of jobs are available there? Do the people have enough food? What kind of infrastructure is in place? Are there any safety nets for the unemployed? Is there national healthcare?
It may be time for the west to rethink its policies of colonialism and begin thinking of humanity as one species and the earth as our home - a home that we share with other wild species, and domestic species. Now, we treat ourselves like shit. It bothers me every day that over 25,000 people die of starvation. Why? Mostly because of the policies of the west, and our nationalism and capitalism.
And we treat our domestic species like shit, too. How many cows, chickens, turkeys, and pigs are raised in brutal conditions, living in constant pain until death releases them?
And, of course, the wild species - we are systematically eradicating them.
So maybe these poachers are part of the overall symptomology of the disease, which is capitalism.
