And while Goldwater did go to Nixon and tell him to resign, it was 2 days before the resignation and after the tapes came out. Up to that point, there was no republican support for getting rid of Nixon. While as many as 7 republicans voted in committee to send one of the articles on impeachment to the floor, remember that was on July 27 and 30 1974, more than 2 years after the break in and days before he resigned. We would never get 7 votes now, hell, we probably couldn't get 1 with the evidence we know about

Between the vote and Goldwater's visit to Nixon, the smoking gun tape was released.

Had it not been for that tape, Goldwater would not have gone to Nixon and convinced him to resign. He would have filled out his term, IMHO.

If we've got such a tape, it could be that the GOP would do nothing. Certainly not so quickly. But without the tape, the GOP supported Nixon.
