(38,726 posts)...because of his Transportation Secretary, Brock Adams, (with his permission) ordered in 1977 that cars made after 83 or 84..."all cars must have seat belts" , the number of deaths on the highways has gone down drastically from a high of over 50,000 in 1980, to a low of 34,000 a couple of years ago. Now it has gone back up (probably due to texting while driving) to 37,000. But that is still 35 percent less, with about 120,000,000 million more people and millions of more cars. Why? After the seat belt order took effect, other safety improvements were made. Air bags, harness belts, crumple zones, safety lights..(like that one in the rear window)..side impact airbags...etc.. Tens of thousands of lives have been saved, but I don't think I have ever heard him brag about it.
Hear is a link where you can check the numbers out..Note that after 1981, there was at first a gradual decrease, and then a continues decrease in deaths due not only the seat belts but other safety devises that were required. Also Carter pioneered the increase of safety devises on highways..guards on side of highways. certain kinds of signs, etc. Remember, Carter's appointee ordered that seat belts be required..That is saving thousands of lives a year, and he doesn't talk about making that decision...(know anyone saved by a seatbelt?..that was Carter's decision) .Take a look at the numbers.
