I was a chapter president in a very prominent chapter of a community service organization in California in the early 80s. Their members were mostly college graduates from upper middle class families. My chapter didn't sponsor these kind of events and we had female members. A neighboring all-male Chapter annually hosted an event called "Sports Night" which was billed as the guys getting together and watching videos of past boxing matches and other sporting events. This was when VCRs were very expensive and few people owned one, so it was a big deal.
I was invited because I was a pretty prominent member being a Chapter President. I didn't go but I knew people who did. The next morning's newspaper had a story that the party had been busted by the police. They had underage girls acting as cocktail waitresses and the grand door prize was a night with a prostitute. The matter disappeared from the press immediately when all charges were dropped and it was realized that several members of the club were local law enforcement officers. Some of them were present.
I wasn't raised in the prep school society, so I was pretty naïve to all this stuff. I was around 28 years old and I never went to college. But this was my brush with the fact that these kind of things go on. It makes the events of the recent weeks seem all that more believable.
