(151,476 posts)Semi-auto/Automatic. It's a meaningless distinction when it comes to people getting shot, really. The reality is that it's really a given that any firearm used in such a circumstance is a semi-auto at best. Full auto firearms are not generally in the hands of the sick morons who shoot up a place like that.
Ever since the AWB was in force, people have been using the argument you're using to ridicule the press. Has it helped yet? No, it has not. Nor will it. The bottom line is that some asshole with a firearm shot a bunch of people. The exact nature of the firearm he used is not relevant to the situation. It wouldn't matter if he used an antique Colt revolver to do the job. The facts are that a bunch of people got shot.
When you can only talk about the nomenclature for the firearm used, you lose your argument immediately. Have you not noticed that?
I know the difference between the two classes of firearms. I also know that it doesn't matter a damned bit when it comes to crimes like this. Not even a little. In reality, the shooter probably would have shot fewer people with a full auto weapon. So, it's truly irrelevant.
Try a different argument next time - one that makes sense. You'll go farther with your defense of firearms that way. The minute you fixate on that distinction in the firearm used, you lose the argument, because it doesn't make a dime's worth of difference.
