(20,709 posts)Since the "suicides don't count" talking point is surely coming next, I'll point out in advance that many studies have found that gun ownership significantly increases suicide risks, because guns provide an easy and lethal means of suicide. Most people who attempt suicide without a gun survive. Most who use a gun don't.
Anyway, regardless of whether suicide "counts", the death numbers alone, as enormous as they are, don't give a full picture of the damage to society from gun violence. There are also injuries, there is psychological trauma, there are crimes that are facilitated by guns, etc. In the "plus" category, there are some instances of self-defense with a gun, but they are rare, and there is no real evidence that owning or carrying a gun reduces risks from crime victimization. In fact, the evidence points in the opposite direction.
