(779 posts)1. Many Americans, and the press, only are capable of putting political actors into two bins: left/liberal and right/conservative. Antifa get put into the left/liberal bin by the press and those who have a motive to do so.
2. In America, political violence has the opposite effect on public opinion as the effect desired by the violent actor, and this works in concert with #1 above. Right wing violence helps us and hurts Republicans. Left wing violence (less common nowadays) hurts us and helps Republicans.
But because it is inconvenient for us, does not mean we should not acknowledge the truth. I read a RW board where the members are quite detached from reality. You've probably heard of it. In their world, every white nationalist who commits violence is a false flag actor or a patsy, including the recent pipe bomber. They just will not accept reality when it is politically inconvenient for them. I do not want us to be like that.
