There are a small number of true libertarians - they really believe that if the government went away, people would govern themselves just fine. They favor open borders because people should be free to move where they want. They it is the correct, logical libertarian position and true libertarians are logical to a fault. They don't realize their solution is unworkable because other people are not like them.

Most libertarians are fakes. They won't do the right thing without a government to make them do it. They just want the government to get out of the way of their selfishness. Life is zero sum game. They don't like immigrants because more immigrants means less for them.

He's still a true libertarian. It's likely he thinks the friends he lost were the victims of government indoctrination.
