I had a similar experience once, except I asked the guy for the name and address of the family, as I knew a place that was hiring that had on-site daycare and could offer the woman a job.
He started sputtering that he didn't actually know her *personally*, he heard about her from someone else who said they knew this mythical welfare scammer.
I told him he was full of it.
