28. For my high school senior American History project, I chose the election of 1948

My grandmother had been a big fundraiser for Humphrey's Senate campaign in 1948, and my dad had just started his career as a print journalist. A friend of my dad's wrote what was to become a definitive book about the 1948 election called "Jumbos and Jackasses," and my dad got him to help me with my presentation with inside info. not all of which was in the book. My history teacher, a crusty old Englishman who did not suffer Southerners lightly, was visibly impressed and gave me my only high grade for the year on it. I had a great time relating Truman's wit, and it showed through. This guy delighted in failing a few students each year, and making them take summer make-up courses before they could graduate, so this was not a little deal.
