The Mayans and the Aztecs, Europe and the Black Death, the Mongol invasions, the list goes on. It only took the plague three years to annihilate anywhere from 30-60% of human life in Europe. Species died and continue to die en-masse all throughout history, replaced by animals better adapted to suit the changing world.

History is vast and varied. We will adapt or we will die, but nothing you're worried about is "new" or "exceptional." It's all happened before.
