I think the distinction here is that you are not refusing service to all of the group, just their most visible face. (whom just happened to be defending putting kids in cages at the time, perhaps your other customers would not like that spoiling their meals.)

The other thing is: refusing service could cost you your business or your safety, but that did not happen.

The point of the editorial is that her business is fine, so no harm no foul. Sarah went somewhere else to eat
