Republicans.

Obama never did this. Almost until the very end of his sabotaged presidency, he repeatedly called on “Congress” to act. As messaging goes, his failure to attack the Republicans by name was a disaster.

The closest Biden ever came was in the debate with Ryan when he said, “this is not your father’s Republican Party folks.” Which was only half a call-out as it suggested there was a decent Republican Party in the not-too distant past (“grandfather’s” would have been more like it). Now Biden is campaigning on bipartisanship and the prospect of Republican epiphanies. It’s insane, IMHO, and one of many reasons why I won’t consider voting for him in the primary.

The basic lines of attack should be clear. Republicans have been distributing income upwards since 1981 and they would bankrupt the government and render it incapable of performing its core public functions if unchecked. Their mission is to make the world safe for the very wealthy and good luck to the rest of you. Don’t go after McConnell. Don’t personalize it. Call the problem by name: Republicans. I have spent much of my adult life dumbstruck by the apparent unwillingness of the vast majority of Democratic candidates and elected Democrats to do this consistently and with force. Better late than never.
