(3,591 posts)Long time lurker (as in 2000, but my account is fairly new). I'm a cancer survivor, myself: Testicular cancer in 2015. Before I had cancer, I used to tell people, "I'm sorry to hear that", when someone would announce news like this. After having had cancer, and then getting that response, I realized how frustratingly useless it is to hear "I'm sorry." or "I'm sorry. Let me know if I can do anything to help."
So, I don't say it anymore. Instead, I say, "Damn, that sucks. What can I do to help?"
Not "Can I do anything to help?" or "Let me know if I can do anything to help.", but "What can I do to help?" Why? Of course you CAN help. You must be ABLE to help if you asked the question. The real question is, WILL you? Let you know? I shouldn't HAVE to let you know, if you really mean to help.
So, LeftOfCool, having been where you are (just once), I know how badly that blows: It blows goat. I don't know where you live, but I'm in NC. If I can do anything for you, I will.
