In reply to the discussion: Let's face it. We're living in a society that devalues women. [View all]KT2000
(22,048 posts)that opened my eyes. I have two women close to me who were raised by parents who thought girls were useless. One was really poor growing up and she was used as a maid. The boys got more food and real beds to sleep in and she did not. In high school her mother made her pay for her food but not the boys. The mother never used her name, but rather called her "girl."
The other woman was not poor but she was likewise treated as the maid. Her parents often mentioned their preference for the boys. She too had to pay for her food while she was in school so she left the home. Her sister stayed and accepted her inferior status for the rest of her life.
These women, like all those raised the same, were denied love. The ones I know grew up to be ardent feminists. So many others though may be against equal rights because they were raised to be inferior and think of themselves that way. They are afraid of equality because they don't know what that is. We have to understand that there are more of these women than we would like to admit.
