Just like Ann Romney's "warm, humanizing portrayal of Mitt". Her role in the play was to add a human dimension to the robot Mitt.

Ryan's role is to be the "young, energetic, serious conservative". He's full of shit and over his head, but that's irrelevant. As an actor in the media's play, his character is preordained.
