16. Am I correct in thinking the USA and the UK are a bit similar

The gun laws in England, where they have a diverse population in my opinion, result in .04 murders per 100,000 residents from what I've read. The number is 3.6 per 100,000 for "Merica - that's 90 (NINETY) times as many. Are we really that violent or might it be the epidemic of guns, especially handguns in this country? I'm not positive I'm not a genius but I am leaning towards the massive number of firearms being a large part of the problem.

From a synopsis of UK firearm laws/regulations:

Police checks on an individual or organisation wishing to own a firearm involve criminal record checks, as well as interviews and reports from a GP. A permit cannot be granted unless police are satisfied both that the applicant has a good reason to own the firearm and that they do not pose a threat to public safety.

Prohibited weapons, such as handguns, can be authorized by the Home Office on behalf of the Secretary of State in exceptional circumstances.

Doesn't seem draconian to me.
