Of course, they will always experience those who society perceives to be "more perfect" but most parents try to help them to develop their self-esteem and coping mechanisms during their most vulnerable stage of youth without constantly being put in a position to feel embarrassment and incite feelings of body dysmorphia. That is why a lot of community pools designed to be "family-supportive"-- as opposed to public beaches-- may have rules restricting the most revealing forms of swimwear for both men and women. Just as they require leak-proof panties on diapered toddlers and restrict glass around the pool.
I once might have been oblivious to this issue as well until an overweight, self-conscious pre-teen committed suicide in my last neighborhood and several child psychologists met with the HOA and community to discuss these issues. I frankly was horrified that it had not occurred to me.
