I don't advocate for fewer media outlets but I really think that people underestimate the power that media, both traditional, cable, and social media have on how people shape their reality.
The Republicans in the late 60's and 70's were watching the same news channels as the average American citizen. When Cronkite told America that the Vietnam War was unwinnable, EVERYONE heard that and it brought that reality home to a lot of people. When the only 3 channels where people were getting their news were all showing the tapes and the Democrats were gearing up to take up articles of impeachment, there was no spin, no alternative facts. You couldn't change the channel or the station, or go on a website where none of that was happening or it was all some big conspiracy to destroy the "good and honorable Richard Milhaus Nixon. It was reality. The president got caught trying to subvert the law to cover up a crime, that he didn't even have to commit.
Today, a huge chunk of the population either isn't paying attention, are getting none of this information, or they are getting some of the information, but it is so slanted toward how Democrats are just so jealous and corrupt, that the guy who is breaking the law is the actual victim. Republicans almost CAN'T go against him because they know their constituents probably think Trump is innocent and they would be selling him out.
