A.k.a. Bullies. People who are inspired by the acquisition of and affiliation with raw power, rather than in championing the underdog. His base is made up of similar types of people; that's why he and they understand each other instinctively and there rest of us are totally flummoxed by them; we just don't get aroused by association with power they way they do. For them, there is something intoxicating and profoundly satisfying, settling, of feeling like they are associated with the powerful; that they are THEREFORE powerful themselves and not the kind of helpless weaklings they despise.
I think TRUMP, on a deep psychological level, wants to be in with, one of, what he perceives to be the "though-guy" gang, the real men that bow to nobody. He is an aspirant. He never looks happier than when he is yucking it up with the Russians in the White House, or Xi in Mar-a-lago, of rubbing shoulders with and "falling in love with" with Kim Jong Un.
It's like a frat pledge boy willing to undergo hazing for induction to the rarefied club of world of dictators.
Also, it's a feature of narcissistic personality disorder: "[Narcissists] only want to associate and be associated with other high-status people, places, and things."
