Looking back I can remember a Russert interview torpedo the 1990s presidential aspirations of John Kasich, just by circling repeatedly to Kasich's ignorance of whatever he was trying to talking-point his way through. If Todd did that interview, it would have been with deference and minimal mention of how reality differed from talking points. That set the image in my mind: you better be knowledgeable and able to think on your feet. I don't get that from MTP today.

Maybe it is by comparison, but it still seems like now people show up expecting to yammer talking points without being seriously challenged unlike what I remember.
