In reply to the discussion: Lindsey Graham is a man [View all]LiberalLovinLug
(14,783 posts)After all the legislation, promoted by federal and state Republicans against LGBTQ rights. And Lindsay right in front. All because he knows his constituents WANT him to abuse LGBTQ rights. They will vote for him if he bashes gays. So he does not speak out for their rights, and stays silent while they pass every evil bill.
Republicans are quick to laugh publicly when a Democrat looks to be going too extreme in being politically correct. Or to say an environmentalist is a hypocrite for taking a bus to a climate change protest.
So i think its a case of wanting to also hurt them where we know it hurts. Not just Lindsay, but his supporters. Because we know they are bigoted already, and so by "teasing" Graham as being gay, it confuses the simpleton deplorables that have put their blinders on when it comes to Graham. Its a way to poke at his supporters. And in a greater context to chip away at the trust in the GOP to uphold their bigoted "family values". Yes its a twisted game.
But, at least as an exercise in Devil's advocacy, I can understand the temptation. Its not coming from a place of consciously hurting or demeaning anyone, other than Graham's hypocrisy. But obviously it doesn't take into account that by using Lindsay's gayness as an insult, even if its only taken that way by other bigots, it also insults all gay persons. And the very state of being gay as something to laugh at. So yes I do agree we should avoid using that weapon. Its just difficult to lay down a weapon you know works against them. Although I do wonder if some in the LGBTQ community would actually like to see some drama unfold where he is exposed - some covert snapshot at a gay club kissing a man, for example, and that it would actually work for their community in that it would reveal how still politicians feel they must hide their sexual orientation to be elected. It would open up that conversation and make him have to either defend his gayness, exposing his hypocrisy, or run away, and resign would be worth it. Also it would be entertaining to watch his traditional supporters, especially from his district, lose their shit.
That fellow liberals using LGBTQ sexual orientation to make Graham the butt of the joke, is understood by the majority of the LGBTQ community that it is being used not because the Democrats that engage in it are anti-gay, but because it is a weapon to cause turmoil in Graham's district ....that that would be worth it. But maybe it isn't worth it. I just wanted to throw out that possibility for discussion.
