(11,767 posts)I won't get into racism because your post is focused on gender and sexuality issues. We are all brought up in a society that emphasizes the value of "masculinity" and dominance and denigrates any departure from such. Women are highly denigrated as weak, unstable, and emotional. Gay and transgender people denigrated for failing to conform to narrow definitions of gender and sexuality for being effeminate (gay men), for failing to accept subservient feminine qualities (masculine lesbians), and not being attracted to the "appropriate sex", etc...
You are absolutely correct about insults based on gender and sexuality having no place in society. We all need to examine WHY we think those insults are acceptable.
Why is it funny or particularly biting about calling Graham "Miss Lindsey"? What is the insult?
I know that people will argue that it is a particular insult to Graham because he is either trying to hide homosexuality or is particularly anti-gay or misogynistic in his policy making. My question is ... So?
The insult while aimed personally is a social act. We insult people so that other people hear and can join in the ridicule. The insult is solely based on drawing attention to the "inferiority" of one identity (female/gay/etc..) and how the target inhabits some of those "inferior" qualities.
