In reply to the discussion: How long should Speaker Pelosi hold up the Articles from the Senate? [View all]Thunderbeast
(3,408 posts)Willl Romney, Gardner, Murkowski, and Collins stand up to McConnell? I hope so. Romney would have support from home state Utah. Murkowski could maintain her independent status with Alaskans. Collins, Gardner, (along wirh McSally, Ernst, and Tillis would probably join the revolt since their fealty to Trump puts them in serious jeopardy back home.
Pelosi is playing this right. She has the high ground right now. Polling favors conviction. Let the trial drag on through election season if POTUS insists on blocking witnesses. SCOTUS would likely express the case and hopefully force Barr, Pompeo, Guliani, and others to testify. While those three would likely perjure themselves, documentary evidence would sink his fantasy of innocence.
A resignation for pardons might be possible. New York State could still go after The Trump Organization for financial crimes.
In any case, I think his position is much weaker while Pelosi controls the conditions for trial. Stalemate would likely reduce the chances of the GOP holding the Senate. This, above all, puts Mitch on a box.
