Having three kids ages 16-23, volunteering in a number of organizations that serve kids (sports, music, etc.), and encountering countless youth as a community minister, I can tell you a big reason why.

Climate change.

They are scared to death about global warming, and well they should be.

Like most youth, they think they'll live forever. (metaporically, not literally) In my generation, that meant we didn't pay attention to healthcare as an issue until our joints started creaking. In this generation, it means they'll be alive until the planet becomes uninhabitable.

Democrats can absolutely mobilize and turnout young voters on the environment. Gun violence too.

These kids aren't stupid. They know which party is the party of climate change deniers and fossil fuel champions.
