They get to say "on what we saw as evidence, he wasn't guilty in our eyes". And Republican voters who want an excuse to vote for them again can use that to say "they did what they thought was best". If Trump had started firing people the moment they gave evidence, the fix would look more obvious.

Yes, exposing truth and facts is important, especially for stopping Trump himself from getting re-elected. But they knew that holding back until the senators can claim "this all happened after the impeachment" was a useful dodge. They'll pretend the truth and facts are only 'new', and there's nothing they can do now.
