Thanks. I try to stay abreast of this stuff, but its not hard when you look at the screen on the register and your eyes bug out on the increase.
I am on a fixed amount for food, so I have become very sensitive to it because, instead of snarling at the inconvenience of paying more, I am forced to keep eating less. That's another problem with exorbitant food prices and steady and large increases, it has a major impact on low-income people and that leads to extreme malnutrition.
Of course, SNAP should be adjusted for the increases, but it isn't and hasn't been. For instance, over several years now, there was only a $2.00-per-month increase just recently, (my average food budget is $6.00-per-day and that "increase" added about $.06-cents-per-day. The initiatives to get people off of it and make eligibility more difficult are a distraction and are going in a dangerous direction, especially with the kind of increases coming that you mentioned. When it comes down to extreme hunger for adults, children and seniors, (in an insanely wealthy country) we don't know how and when that will boil over and/or impact our society in major ways.
Considering that you have recipients with little or no income who depend on it and also scores of working poor who barely get by on the "supplemental" aspect of it, a crises is looming. What makes it easier to play with is the terminology, methinks. Both the terms supplemental and assistance changed the ball game and they mean that they are only supplementing what you already have or get.
