It could be as useful as tap water or as safe as undiluted bleach, and THEY DON'T CARE. That will not stand in the way of them mass manufacturing and distributing something, just so they can say they did so before Election Day.
They will completely subvert or overrule or Saturday Night Massacre the experts at the FDA to get nominal approval of something, ANYTHING, no matter how bad or incomplete the trial data is.
I'm just about the most anti-anti-vaxx person I know, so it pains me to speak ill of a vaccination program, but Azar just confirmed what everyone should have suspected based on Trump's prior behavior. If a vaccine is approved prior to election day, that approval must unfortunately be considered tainted by political considerations and is not trustworthy as science-based medicine. Even an independent evaluation of the evidence is not going to be reliable because one cannot trust the completeness and genuineness of any data provided by a Trump-controlled FDA under these circumstances.
It is incredibly immoral to manufacture and distribute hundreds of millions of doses of a vaccine before there is evidence that it is safe and effective because there is tremendous inertia involved. Once that train is rolling, it is impossible to stop because of the "what other options do you really have?"-problem and sunk-cost behavior.
Even if the safety profile is bad and the effectiveness is subpar, once that vaccine is distributed, it is inevitable that it will be used at large scale. Medical experts know this. Azar just doesn't care.
