(60,838 posts)Adding some on from Tennessee is doubling down on one area not adding an area. In 2004, it was explained that Edwards was not chosen for geography, but for personal pluses he showed in the primary.
Both the media and many powerful people in the Democratic party were impressed by Edwards. The media had plenty of articles claiming that the only reason he might not be picked is because Kerry feared being overshadowed by the charismatic Edwards. They never explained why, if he was SO charismatic, Kerry easily defeated him. The good press did lead to polls adding him as VP helping more than others and both Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy praised the idea of adding him. In reality, he was a terrible pick because he was not the engaged Edwards of the primary and he refused to be a team player and was only concerned about how things reflected on him. It is clear he wanted the position just to set himself up for 2008.
This year, like 2004, the person who easily won the nomination is publicly being told he needs the excitement of a good VP pick. In 2008, it was repeated that Kerry advised Obama to pick a
VP he wanted to have at his side to run the country. I always wondered if that was a bit instinct he wished he would have followed when told by many his best chances were with taking Edwards, who otherwise would not have been his choice.
