In reply to the discussion: Trump's Poll Numbers Are So Bad the GOP Is Starting to Panic About a 'Wipeout' [View all]Awsi Dooger
(14,565 posts)Currently there is extreme overreaction to recent trends. I never participate in that, or make silly assertions that it will keep going in the same direction.
This is a general election, not a primary. There is no such thing as a legitimate 12 point lead or legitimate 8 point lead. Biden is not special enough to win by those margins. He is an old man whose weaknesses will show up. He'll make mistakes on the campaign trail. Once mistakes like that show up they will earn tons of scrutiny and the race will naturally tighten. There will be themes of the devil you know superior to the old man you don't really know.
That is the reality of the matter. Negativity is not an attractant. We will never win huge in a general election when our overriding theme is Anyone But Trump. The only way we could have won by the currently touted national margins is if we had an extremely charismatic young "vote for" candidate. Unfortunately the 2020 slate did not include that type of candidate.
This stuff is very easy as a handicapper. Go ahead and bookmark. It will play out the way I describe. The great news is that Trump's approval rating has dropped to the level that now I would rather be our side than their side. Scant months ago when Trump was steadily climbing on 538 compilation I would rather have been their side. But as I have always emphasized, Trump would never be bright enough or restrained enough to understand that all he had to do as an incumbent was shut up and allow the situational advantages to play out in his favor.
