I was in a way making the same point you did. If North Korea attacks the south it will lose decisively. And China knows that.

So at that point the least costly thing for China to do is handle North Korea on their own. Send in their troops and topple the Kims for a more rational government.

That, in my opinion would be preferable to them over a war with South Korea. To the South as well.
