Fireworks (in your neighborhood), yay or nay?

this is the case around the country, but they started earlier than usual here in Oakland (around the middle of last month). Usually it starts in mid or late June. I can tolerate the fireworks that sound like the professional kind, but I absolutely HATE the extremely loud ones--the ones that sound like bombs and gun shots. I can't stand the jackasses who have used those all day every day for the past month around here, and the police either won't or can't do anything about it. July 4th is officially my least favorite holiday because of the fireworks alone. It wouldn't be so bad if people only used the fireworks on the 4th or the night before, but they always start weeks in advance! It pisses me off. Aside from that, I also feel sorry for any pet owners around here whose pets freak out over the noise.
