... and most of those deaths are ordinary traffic accidents.

Taxi and Limo drivers have it worse and are generally discouraged from shooting unruly passengers.

I've been a construction laborer and a grounds maintenance worker. Both of these jobs are more dangerous than police work.

Commercial fishing and logging are the most dangerous jobs in the U.S.A., six or seven times more dangerous than being a cop.

Farming is more dangerous. All sorts of horrible things happen to farmers. They get mangled up in machines, they suffocate in manure pits, they are killed by animals, they work too many hours and fall asleep driving...

The most difficult job I ever had was teaching science in a rough underfunded public school. I doubt most cops could do that. Teachers are not allowed to shoot, taze, or beat up students who are discipline problems. They don't get a lot of backup from administrators. I've also worked in places that serve alcohol to rough people who have scary tattoos and ride big motorcycles.

We'd have much better cops if some kind of social work was a prerequisite to becoming a cop. If someone can handle a classroom overcrowded with forty students, half whom would rather be anywhere else, and a few who have a history of violence, then they could probably handle a drunk guy sleeping in his car without any violence.
