North Carolina. I'm white and my kids are, too. I've told my kids if they use that kind of language and direct it towards a person of color they should expect a physical response. Specifically what I've told them is that 'If you call somebody a nigger you should expect to get your ass beat'. That and a lot more but that's the line that gets their attention and focuses them for the rest of the lecture. WAY too much history associated with the term in question.
It's an escalation. Decent people should never use it. Better people than they would walk away. But the best person on a bad day might not walk away.
We've all had a lot of bad days recently.
