I served in the Navy during the Vietnam war. I served two cruises to the "hostile fire zone:, but because I was at sea, I also never was shot at. Like you, I am uncomfortable when people "thank" me for my sacrifice. It would have been nice to get some of that recognition when I returned. Didn't happen until they needed cannon fodder for Iraq and Afghanistan. I also still live by the oath I swore on that January day in 1969.
