I was given a 10% chance of dying for the operation to replace my aortic valve and here I am. Surviving the removal of a kidney a moth later had a 20% chance of survival, partly because of the operation, partly the closeness of the two operations, and long term the chance that the cancer would recur - it's been three years and it is not back.

I'll take 9% as a quite acceptable figure.
