(25,355 posts)from Puerto Rico and Latin American countries. Made a lot of friends from that experience. We formed a large, informal social group that got together for parties, picnics, birthdays, etc.
They were from several countries, e.g. Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecudaor, Spain, Cuba, Dominican Republic, and one couple in which the guy was Dutch snd his wife was Brazilian. It was like a "family" support group for people far from their homelands.
I used to introduce myself to newcomers in the group as "Soy la gringa," which always got a laugh. We shared holiday customs from the various nations, including a modified enactment of la posada for Christmas. They also spoke freely about their impressions of Americans and the US, which was educational for me.
We're all much older now. A few have passed away. I miss the old days when we were all younger and present for party reservations that took up half of a restaurant with 2 or 3 banquet tables to acommodate us.
