U.S. Testing Czar: Fauci Doesn't 'Have The Whole National Interest In Mind' [View all]

Adm. Brett Giroir, the Trump-appointed U.S. assistant health secretary who’s been charged with overseeing the nation’s coronavirus testing, said on Meet the Press Sunday that the U.S. is winning the war against coronavirus, seeming to agree with President Donald Trump’s assessment of the coronavirus response while breaking with Dr. Anthony Fauci, who said last week “I don’t think you can say we’re doing great,” adding, “I mean, we’re just not.”

In the Sunday morning interview, Giroir told Meet the Press that he respects Fauci, but said that Fauci “is not 100% right” and that he doesn’t necessarily "have the whole national interest in mind.” Giroir said Fauci’s views are because “he looks at it from a very narrow public health point of view,” implying Fauci doesn’t necessarily take other factors, like economic impact, into consideration when making recommendations.

Giroir spoke against the idea of shutting large swaths of the country down again, saying that it could actually bring negative health consequences like worsening mental health and causing people to miss exams such as cancer screenings if elective procedures are shut down.

The Trump administration is reportedly planning to have Giroir and FEMA Administrator Peter Gaynor make more public appearances related to the coronavirus response, while Fauci has had some media requests denied after making recent comments suggesting the U.S. is not doing a good job of controlling the pandemic.
