(18,402 posts)at the house of a board member for the public institution at which my husband worked (we were newcomers, and thus invited to get acquainted). The spouse of another employee was discreetly filling us in on who was who in the room, and at one point said: "See that older gentleman in the rumpled old plaid jacket and the scuffed-up shoes?" We saw him. "Well, that's XX (the owner of a distinguished chain of department stores and a noted art collector). You have to be that rich to get away with looking so bad," he quipped.
It's true. A lot of very wealthy people of that generation (and even Mitch's) drive old cars and dress down, because they don't want to "look" wealthy. Or sometimes because they just don't give a damn about it.
With McConnell, I think it's mainly that there's no way of making him look good, no matter how good the tailor.
