(9,109 posts)that sees a minority party more and more out of step with the vast majority of voters somehow ending up in control of the presidency, the Congress, and the judiciary.
The Democratic candidate for the presidency won the plurality of votes in six out of the past seven elections, and yet the GOP took the White House in three of those elections.
Vast swaths of voters aren't even represented by voting members in Congress, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico come immediately to mind. There should be an immediate push for statehood for both of them.
There also needs to be some sort of commission set up to examine all the Trump appointments to offices in the executive branch, with the goal of weeding out appointees who are clearly incompetent and even opposed to the goals of their department.
Congress needs to hold hearings on Russian and other foreign influence in our government, on how the COVID relief money was spent, on "faith based initiatives" that have funneled money into racist, homophobic, and misogynist organizations, on right wing infiltration of the police and the military, on the use of paramilitary groups to crush dissent, on the failed response to the pandemic, on the gutting of environmental and civil rights regulations, on the compromising of science at the CDC and elsewhere, and on whatever other atrocities and have committed these past four years.
Investigations also need to be launched into possible illegalities committed by the Trump clan involved in government, including violations of the Hatch Act and the emoluments clause of the Constitution.
Legislation must be passed requiring all presidential candidates to release at least ten years worth of their tax returns.
Legislation must be passed requiring all holders of public office to put their personal business into blind trusts during the length of their terms in office.
And some way must be found to gut the Electoral College's ability to assign presidents regardless of the choice of the voters.
There's more, but this is for starters. If we can get these measures passed we can help insure that the will of the people will be respected going into the future.
