There was a lot of speculation of Bush giving himself and Cheney a “pocket pardon” to be revealed later when needed.

If Trump were to pardon himself at the end of the term would we want the long drawn out battle to overturn the pardon and THEN prosecute?

Plenty of speculation and legal opinion here regarding trump floating the self pardon in 2018:
