My dad served in the Pacific Island war and I was very proud of his service and remember standing beside his flag draped casket too. I also remember how proud he was when I joined the Navy during the Vietnam War. My dad was severely haunted by his war and PTSD made sure it was his war, and he was in and out of VA mental hospitals trying to deal with it, throughout my life, until he passed. Your post just made me think about it all, so, hugs to you.
