(1,400 posts)the whole downtown changed. under old man daley, they rolled up the sidewalks when the last evening train left for the burbs. no one would be caught dead down there.
but when the college kids came, it became a 24/7 scene.
navy pier, now. that is the opposite of that story. locals hate it, mostly.
dont know how old you are, or how long you have been gone, so sorry if you already know that stuff.
tho i was raised in the burbs, my ppl were west side irish. trips to the city were one of my biggest joys as a kid. north and narragansett. still have a couple of peeps on the oak park side.
i landed in cragin when i moved here at 25. (66 now) hated it. everyone around me was bitter that they were left behind in the white flight. so racist, which was something i had never, ever experienced. all mexicano over there now.
in rogers park now. 35 yrs. this is my real hometown. my sisters all thought i was nuts to raise my 5 kids in the city. but they are citizens of the world, every one of them. some of their kids are afraid of their own shadows.
