Spot on Bucolic! The Great Dumbing Down and the rise of Trash Culture has been very successful. Just pick up an old magazine from 1962. The Saturday Evening Post was a magazine in many working class homes back then. My parents read it cover to cover even though they didn't ever attend college. It was full of long articles of international coverage with rich vocabulary and higher level thinking. For example: An 8 page spread on Nasser and the Middle East, an article about Melina Marcuri who was minister of culture in Greece and wanted the Elgin marbles back, national news about real people saying important things about foreign policy. I think The Great Dumbing Down was well planned!
