(31,384 posts)which is a 15 minute drive from my apartment. We have to go through hoops to vote absentee here in NC. A witness signature is required on the back of absentee ballots, and there are restrictions for who qualifies as a witness. Living alone, I had someone who works in the apartment building be my witness--and I verified she was registered to vote--before turning in my ballot.
When I arrived at the County Board of Elections office there were several parking places available, but not a lot. There was a security guard outside to check masking. There were blue markings on the floor inside to keep social distancing. There was a guide seated to point me in the right direction. More markings on the floor in the room where ballots were being collected. Another guide. Two people seated behind plexiglass. I walked right up to one of them. No waiting. I was handed a form to fill out--dated, timed, printed name, address, signed name swearing this was my ballot I was returning. Asked if I had a pen to fill out the form (although they had pens available). The person took my ballot and the form and my next step will be to check on-line that the ballot has been accepted without being disqualified for some reason (only showing it was mailed currently).
I had intended to early vote in person four blocks from my apartment but the location where I have voted since moving downtown 2 1/2 years ago was not included on the list of early voting sites. So since my ballot arrived before early voting starts this Thursday, I decided to use the absentee ballot and return it in person.
When I can verify on-line that my ballot has been accepted, I'll come back and update this post.
On edit: 1,300,919 absentee ballots have been requested as of today from the NC Board of Elections. A total of 478,091 absentee ballots have been returned to date.
Updated: my ballot has been confirmed and accepted as of 10/14/2020! Yay!
