My dad drove a semi. Local only. He delivered dairy products to a half dozen supermarkets each day.
I doubt they would have allowed that, even in the 60s & 70s when things were a bit less divisive.
I know that representing company management hundreds of times, it would have forbidden to discuss politics with customers. In fact, we were reminded yearly!
