This country, the world, is changing. Trump promised them he wouldn't let that happen. Of course he lied. Trump considered them useful idiots. They're being left behind and they can't, they don't understand why.
They can't be angry at Trump. That would be an admission that they were wrong. So they're angry at anyone Trump tells them are responsible.
Because you were polite and well mannered, that was empathy and consideration, another quality they can't understand. That makes you the Other, the one Trump warned them about.
