(1,047 posts)My honey and I voted in person today (10/18). I live in a rural, red county, and Trump flags are everywhere. We are allowed to vote in any polling location in the county, so we chose a small-town polling place where voters normally are outnumbered by poll workers during early voting.
Not the case today.
Masks were required, and they had a supply for those who didn't bring one, plus a hand sanitizer dispenser. We all got a disposable plastic glove to use on the touch-screen system. Our voting machines were purchased by the county for the 2018 election cycle and use paper ballots. Both local parties agreed on this selection.
The story goes that Texas isn't as much a red state as it is a non-voting state. Well, turnout across the state is setting records, so I have hope. Beto invigorated Democrats last cycle, and that energy appears to be more than a fluke.
Texas may or may not go blue this cycle, but if nothing else, we will reaffirm the message we sent in 2018: Democrats can and will compete here. Texas is is no longer a lock where the GOP can count on and divert resources elsewhere.
Once we actually do manage to flip Texas, GOP presidential aspirations will evaporate into nothing more than a disgusting residue.
So I survived long enough to get my vote for Democrats in every single race we're in for 2020, and it felt great!
