There were sacrifices made by everyone. Many commodities such as sugar, coffee, meat, cheese, fat, and canned goods were strictly rationed. Gasoline and rubber were in very short supply so people walked and forget joyrides. Clothing and shoes were limited so people made do. Everything went to the war effort. You grew a huge victory garden. Kids collected scrap metal. Everyone went to work in war production factories-noisy, gritty, hard, dirty jobs “the Arsenal of Democracy”. 16,112,565 Americans served in the armed forces. 405,399 were killed. 671,278 were wounded. Hollywood switched to wartime entertainment and propaganda. Once we became directly involved, we led, and we won and we saved the world. Now we can’t even put on a goddamn mask and our statistics are the worst in the world. We are the laughingstocks. The laggards, the example of what not to do. We are so much better than this. The spirit of America lives in all of us. With new leadership we can, and we will, and we must do better. 405,399 people gave their lives for this country and what it stands for. We will not let their deaths be in vain. Ever.
