(60,861 posts)He put his entire Navy record, received from the Navy, on his website - with the exclusion of medical records, which he allowed legitimate media to see. He also did include an answer - that the media was alerted to - when he spoke to the Firefighters. He essentially referred to the NAVY record, which he said was true 30 years before and it still was. The Vietnam era Secretary of the Navy, Republican John Warner, backed Kerry on his war record. They ignored that the SBVT included many people who NEVER severed with Kerry. They ignored that Kerry had the support of all but 1 person who had been on any of his swiftboats. In addition, Kerry had the support of the Republican marine (then law officer) he saved in Vietnam.
In addition, several claims of the SBVT were proven lies - they just moved on to the next set of accusations. Even though they were caught in lies - sometimes because they were NEVER in the same place and same time as Kerry - they just moved onto the next set of accusations. The problem was the cable media continued to give them coverage - often more time than they gave Kerry and the men actually on his boat, all but one of whom were extremely loyal to Kerry.
DU or the Kerry blog actually led me to read his online fitness reports. Someone referred to them to definitively answer what color his eyes are - hazel. That was less interesting then reading what was written in the late 1960s. His superiors describe an intelligent, creative, mature officer who many noted earned intense loyalty from those reporting to him. One thing I thought then, was that as those records were there - and were written before politics entered, someone in the media should have used them to define who 25 year old Kerry was. The closest thing to that was Doug Brinkley's book, but in the heat of 2004, a short article or cable analysis could really have helped.
As it was the PRINT media was not bad -- the ratings chasing cable media was not helpful.
